The Left Palm – A Look Back

Recently, I had a Facebook memory pop up in my news feed, reminding me of the fact that it’s been fourteen years since I first published The Left Palm and Other Halloween Tales of the Supernatural. Well, aside from the fact that I was floored that so much time has passed, I also thought about how many incarnations this particular book has gone through with changing covers and interior photos and how many new works these stories have ignited. So, I thought it might be fun to take a look back at the history of The Left Palm.

These are the three covers that I’ve used for The Left Palm, which was originally published in 2009. The one on the left was a shot taken at The Lafayette Cemetery in New Orleans. The middle cover was an adaptation of that same shot with a full moon pic added. The most recent cover on the end is a combination of a picture from the Metairie Cemetery of an angel statue and a full moon pic.

These are two interior photos that I used for the short story, “Wolves.” The werewolf from this story has appeared in a number of other works including the short story, “The Broken Window,” and the novel The Broken Vow. I’ve also written a sequel to The Broken Vow on Kindle Vella entitled The Story of Enid which I hope to release next summer as a book and eBook.

These are two different pictures that I used in the interior for the short story, “Emma Fallon.” This story has gone on to inspire a full-length prequel entitled The Alchemist’s Bride that I have published at Kindle Vella and intend to release as a print and eBook hopefully this Spring.

These are the two interior photos I’ve used for the story, “The Soul Shredder.” I still place “The Soul Shredder” high on my list for one of the most disturbing stories I’ve ever written.

These are two interior photos I used for “Wildflowers.” I’ve always considered “Wildflowers” a sweet yet very haunting love story.

These are the two interior pictures I’ve used for my signature story, “The Left Palm.” I got the idea for this story a long time ago, when I heard that in palmistry the left palm is the path that you are meant to follow in this life and the right palm is what you actually make of your life. I’ve always considered that a very interesting concept, thus it evolved into a story.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this trip down memory lane with me. The Left Palm is still available in print and eBook at most online retailers. It is also available as an audiobook from Audible and Amazon.

Halloween is the time of year when that veil between worlds is thinned, and you can just catch a quick glimpse into the realm of the unknowable. In this collection of short stories, Evelyn Klebert takes you to a place where ordinary life splinters into the sphere of the paranormal.

The journey begins with one woman’s unstoppable quest for vengeance against a supernatural creature in “Wolves,” and continues in an old historical graveyard where a horrifying discovery is uncovered in “Emma Fallon.” In “The Soul Shredder,” a psychiatrist’s unusual patient opens his eyes to a disturbing new view of reality, while in “Wildflowers,” a woman strikes up a supernatural friendship with impossible implications. And in “The Left Palm,” a fortuneteller in the French Quarter receives a most unexpected and terrifying customer.

Travels into the Breach – Audiobook

Are you ready to take a trip, a journey, into the beyond? Travels into the Breach: Accounts of a Reclusive Mystic is now available as an audiobook at Audible.com and Amazon. You can now listen to the adventures of paranormal investigator, Malachi McKellan, and his lifelong companion and spirit guide and Simon Tull. I hope you check it out!

Travels into the Breach: Accounts of a Reclusive Mystic

At first glance, his life seems quiet, serene, and even uneventful. Malachi McKellan, a 65-year-old widower and author of esoteric books, lives largely as a recluse in a house situated just off the banks of Bayou St. John in New Orleans. But unbeknownst to most, he is also a bit of a detective, a specific kind of detective whose specialty is psychic attacks. Alongside his lifelong companion and spirit guide Simon Tull, a 19th-century, 20-something English gent, Malachi battles the unseen, and is an unacknowledged hero to the most vulnerable. Most of the population have no idea what is really happening beneath the surface of the world in which they live.

In this collection of adventures, Malachi McKellan and Simon Tull wage war against the most insidious elements of the paranormal. In The Three, Malachi and Simon come to the aid of a young woman being victimized by a group of dark witches. An old apartment building is the scene of an unimaginable battle against monstrous forces in The Lost Soul. Malachi and Simon find themselves strategizing against a psychic vampire in Obsession, and The Hotel turns back time to the 1980s where Malachi confronts a demonic spirit. In Between, a past life is revisited as Malachi attempts to rescue a beloved sister from committing her existence to vengeance, and The Wedding takes a personal turn when Malachi must confront painful truths while endeavoring to protect his niece from a potentially devastating union.

Travel into the breach with a pair of paranormal warriors who choose to confront overwhelming forces on a battlefield unsuspected by most.

Books on Sale

Two of my books are on sale this week during the Cornerstone Summer Book Special. The Lady in the Blue Dress and The Tethering: A Portent of Crows are 40% Off Tuesday through Saturday (August 22-26). Drop by Cornerstone Book Publishers and check out this sale!

The Lady in the Blue Dress

When she was a child, Mika Devalieur was introduced to her grandmother’s most precious possession — a priceless and mysterious painting that she simply called The Lady in the Blue Dress. Upon Adele St. Clair’s death, the painting is left in the care of her granddaughter with only one stipulation. Mika must hand over the family heirloom to a total stranger. Mika Devalieur desperately wants to deny her beloved grandmother’s last request, but she can’t. Torn between her Gran’s last wishes and her desire to hold onto the Lady, she ultimately journeys to rural Virginia, where an enigmatic man shows her that this painting is only the beginning.

What quickly becomes clear is that James Clairmont knows much more about her and the Lady than he is letting on. He begins to slowly unravel a powerful supernatural connection that spans three generations of her family. Mika finds herself desperate to uncover the entire truth before she falls in love with a man filled with so many secrets — secrets about him, about her, and most especially about The Lady in the Blue Dress. First published on Kindle Vella, episodes 1-23

The Tethering: A Portent of Crows

Deborah Brandt’s beloved Aunt Gena always told her that she was special, a bit different, and would have to live her life unlike other people. Of course, this she disregarded as the ramblings of her lovely but notably eccentric aunt. Although there were the things that Aunt Gena said that seemed true — like Deborah being sensitive to energy shifts, having potentially psychic impressions, and dreaming of a spirit guide — none of it could be real. But the most ridiculous thing that her Aunt Gena told her before she died is that there is someone special out there for her. She said that he is an extraordinary man who is not only her perfect match but someone who she would learn from so that they could help the world in difficult times. How ridiculous! It sounds like a fairy tale, and no such person exists.

Daniel Wren is unique. He has been raised and trained from a young age to hone his psychic gifts. He lives in a world unimagined by most. And he has been waiting for years to contact his counterpart, soulmate if you will. But the problem is that she is painfully unaware of the type of life that he lives and the life she would be entering into if they came together.

His dilemma becomes how best to proceed. How can he win her over and move forward before outside forces take that decision away from him?

The Long Hot Summer

Well,

I hope everyone is finding a way to keep cool this summer. I know how terribly hot it has been for so many. For me, though in hiding from the heat it has been a productive for me. Just yesterday, I posted the last episode of The Alchemist’s Bride at Kindle Vella. This means I will be looking at a release date for the book sometime this Fall or early Winter. I will also be posting the final episodes of The Story of Enid at Kindle Vella early next month, so that would put a release date for that book probably the beginning of next year. But of course, if anyone is interested in reading those tales now, drop by Kindle Vella. The first three episodes of anyone’s Vella stories are always free.

Currently I am working on edits for another book, the paranormal romance, Dumaine Street which hopefully will be out either late next month or early September. And in addition, I am also juggling audiobook work. Recently, I released The Lady in the Blue Dress and The Tethering: A Portent of Crows as audiobooks and stay tuned because there are more in the works as well. So, try to enjoy the rest of your summer. And please stay cool.

E.K.

The Alchemist Bride

Emmeline Lescale might as well be an orphan. Her mother is dead, and her father wants nothing to do with her. She has been raised by an aunt in Vacherie, LA and virtually treated as an unpaid servant. But suddenly, her neglectful father insists she come live with him. New Orleans in the 1880’s is no place for a proper young lady, especially when her father is embroiled with a mysterious young doctor whose interests venture deeply and dangerously into the world of the supernatural.

The Story of Enid

When one realizes that a long-lost soulmate has been reincarnated, it poses some complications. When you have been a werewolf for nearly a millennium, the complications explode exponentially. Ethan Garraint understands that he should stay far away from Erin Holt, but she is in his city, New Orleans, and possibly in danger. And the truth is, he doesn’t want to stay away. He only wants to remind her of the lifetime they lived long ago, when they were more than lovers, when they became legend.

The Tethering: A Portent of Crows now an Audiobook

The Tethering has just been released as an Audiobook!

Deborah Brandt’s beloved Aunt Gena was a bit of an eccentric who rambled on about psychic phenomena and spirit guides. But the strangest thing she told her was that Deborah had a unique destiny and would meet a man who would become more than her soulmate. Of course, all of that couldn’t possibly be true, or could it? Fall in love this summer. A Portent of Crows: The Tethering is now available as an audiobook at Amazon and Audible.

Summer Book Special

Cornerstone Book Publishers is having a Summer Book Special. Every week this summer, Tuesday through Friday, two books will be featured and offered at a discount price of 40% of the regular retail price. It just so happens this week, July 4-7, two of my books, Gravier’s Bookshop and The Hotel Mandolin, will be on sale. These are the first two volumes of the New Orleans Paranormal Mystery Series. Currently, I am working on the fourth installment that I hope will be out sometime this fall. Make sure you drop by Cornerstone to see what’s on special every week. 🙂

Gravier’s Bookshop: A New Orleans Paranormal Mystery

Caroline Breslin always knew that she would have to live her life differently. Being an extremely sensitive and gifted empath in a family full of psychics has led her to lead a rather cautious existence. But she is determined to strike out on her own, moving out of the protection of her Prytania Street home. And all is going well, except of course if you don’t count the neighbor upstairs in her apartment building who may, or may not, be a dark witch, and the increasing flow of malevolent energy that seems to be directed just her way. All of that and trying to make ends meet seems a bit much for this rather inexperienced New Orleans girl. The last thing that Caroline wants to do is run back to her family for help, even though she is painfully over her head. What she really needs is a knight in shining armor or maybe just that guy that keeps haunting her dreams.

Max Gravier had no intention of becoming a recluse, but after his wife’s death it seems his life is heading in that direction. He spends his time running Gravier’s Bookshop on Magazine Street and occasionally, on the quiet, helps the police solve a crime with his psychic sensitivities. That is until he answers Caroline Breslin’s call, a cry for help out of his dreams that draws him rather unexpectedly into a fierce battle for a young woman’s soul.

Join them and the whole Breslin family psychic clan in this first installment of The New Orleans Paranormal Mystery Series where you’ll travel into a new world just a few steps into the turbulent realm of the unseen.

The Hotel Mandolin: A New Orleans Paranormal Mystery

Peril is wrapped up in the most enticing of disguises, in The Hotel Mandolin, the second installment of The New Orleans Paranormal Mystery series. It’s opulent, it’s classic, and it’s one of the most renowned hotels nestled deep in New Orleans’ famous business district but something is amiss at the Hotel Mandolin.

PI Peter Norfleet is calling out the big guns to help him investigate a recent suicide at the famous establishment — his good friend Max Gravier, a formidable psychic, and his girlfriend Caroline Breslin, a talented empath. But none of them can seem to scratch the surface of this puzzle, no one except Cassie Breslin, Caroline’s clairvoyant mother.

Cassie, unwittingly, has somehow tapped into an unexpected connection with a tragic ghost from the turn of the century who is linked to a whole trail of suicides winding tragically through the grand old hotel’s history. And the more she uncovers, the more dangerous and malevolent the mystery becomes.

A Villain

Here is a snippet of a recent episode of The Story of Enid that I’ve posted at Kindle Vella. The werewolf of my stories – Ethan Garraint, also known as Etienne and Geraint – is given to expressing himself in journal entries. So, dropping in occasionally on his personal writing gives a closer look at his very unique psyche. I hope you enjoy and drop by Kindle Vella (the first three episodes are free), if you’d like to pick up his tale or his previous novel, The Broken Vow.

A Villain

What constitutes a villain? It is an ancient question that the great philosophers contemplated, often, repeatedly, and with no consistent conclusions. It is a question I have turned over in my mind occasionally as well. Thus, in my vast experience and within the scope of my long, protracted lifetime, I have concluded that defining a villain seems to lie largely in perspective. Outside of extreme examples, mass murderers, horrific despots, and the like, most villains don’t usually see themselves in that regard.

As a prime example, I offer myself. I have been hunted in my lifetime, termed a beast, and, yes, have killed, some might say, unjustly. So, am I the villain? Well, it’s my tale, my chronicle, though I try to be even-handed and fair in its retelling, though unequivocally, I would have to say not.

But Lapetus, my adoptive Brother, might he be a villain?

He certainly dresses the part and seems sinister enough and does try to impose his will. But does he believe so?

Probably not, no, probably not at all.

The Story of Enid

When one realizes that a long-lost soulmate has been reincarnated, it poses some complications. When you have been a werewolf for nearly a millennium, the complications explode exponentially. The Broken Vow: Vol. I The Clandestine Exploits of a Werewolf

In the heart of every man there is a history. In the heart of every monster there is a story. In this first installment of “The Clandestine Exploits of a Werewolf,” Ethan Garraint is on a vendetta that begins in the heart of the Pyrenees with the fall of Montségur and leads him to the streets of New Orleans nearly five hundred years later. But the person he chases isn’t really a man anymore and Ethan has been a werewolf for almost a millennium. With the aid of a gifted seer, he is on a blood hunt that will culminate in a journey that crosses the line between heaven and earth and ends somewhere in between.

West End – “Coney Island” of New Orleans

Did you know that at the turn of the century New Orleans’ West End was known as the “Coney Island” of New Orleans?

From about 1880 to the 1930s, a resort area along the banks of Lake Pontchartrain drew many inhabitants in and outside of New Orleans. This marine resort thrived and was complete with a board walk, hotels, and several food service, dancing and entertainment establishments as well as amusement rides.

Read all about West End as well as a few other New Orleans’ treasures in episode 9 of my Kindle Vella,”The Alchemist’s Bride.” (The first three episodes of any Kindle Vella are always free to read.)
